Mothers from
Baidibek region of South Kazakhstan
Correspondnets of RFE/RL report from Astana that several women from South Kazakhstan came to the capital intending to meet with President Nursultan Nazarbayev this month. The women are mothers of many children. They say that they have not received social allowances due to their children for the last 5 years. Several local officials of South Kazakhstan were arrested and jailed last year. They were found guilty of having misused the financial allocations for the mothers with many children. But after the officials' trial, the local inhabitants have not received any money yet. The ladies came to RFE/RL bureau in Astana today, January 12. According to Ulmeken Saidova - Chairwoman of Adilet Movement, the women have sent special telegrams to Kazakh Presidential office and other officials of the country asking them to meet with them in order to discuss their problems. But no response was ever sent back to the women by the officials so far. The ladies say that in case if Kazakh officials refuse to meet with them, they will try to reach Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in order to meet with Kyrgyz leader Askar Akayev. They hope that Askar Akayev will help them to meet with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, since Akayev and Nazarbayev are in law. Their children got married in 1998.
