Human rights are an absolute value
Kazakh opposition addresses Italian Senate
Received via e-mail, 23 February 2001

Senate of the Republic of Italy

We, representatives of the Forum of Democratic Forces of Kazakhstan, uniting dozens of political parties, public movements and NGOs, would like to express our deep gratitude for the resolution passed by the Italian supreme assembly. This resolution is an example of honest, unbiased and highly objective evaluation of current political situation in Kazakhstan (XIII Legislature, 1024th Reunion (PM)).

We thank you for your concern about the situation regarding democracy and human rights in our country, for understanding of those complex problems and great difficulties that the people of Kazakhstan is facing. Especially, we would like to emphasize the fair appraisal and concrete recommendations you have given your Government.

This resolution proves that your country, as a truly democratic state, does not apply double standards and human rights remain your absolute value. This proves that other western democracies should fight against violation of human rights not only at home but the world over.

The resolution you have adopted is not only widely discussed all over world. We are positive that it will give a great impetus to building democracy and civil society in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan's officials do their best to hush up the resolution of the Italian Senate. They have imposed information blockade on this important international event. This step demonstrates that Nazarbayev's regime is unable to take western or domestic criticism.

We greatly appreciate your support of democratic goals in Kazakhstan. Undoubtedly, this resolution puts Italy in the van of the fight for democracy and human rights not only in Central Asia, but also in all post-soviet states.
