Forum of Kazakhstan's Democratic Forces
demands Nazarbayev's resignation

Correspondents of RFE/RL report from Almaty that today, November 30, a union of opposition parties and movement known as Forum of Kazakhstan's Democratic Forces held press conference in the former Kazakh capital. Leaders and activists of the political alliance demanded Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to step down. That is the first time when a political movement openly and officially demands Nursultan Nazarbayev to leave the Presidency. On November 28, a well known Kazakh dissident Karishal Asanov expressed the same demand at press conference he held in Almaty. Amirzhan Qosanov - Chairman of Kazakhstan's Republican People Party said to correspondents of RFE/RL that the official demand of the political alliance had been caused by the recent political turmoil in the country.

Also the issue of Bolat Abilov's current state was discussed at the press conference. A member of Kazakh Parliament's Lower Chamber - Mazhilis, also known as one of the most prominent Kazakh businessmen, Bolat Abilov is under pressure currently for his decision to leave pro-Presidential Otan party, interests of which he officially used to represent in the Parliament. (See Kazakh News, November 28-29, 2001). Rozlana Taukina - an activist of Forum of Kazakhstan's Democratic Forces told journalists that "the time came for Parliament members when they had to choose either to be puppets in hands of the power holders or to be really independent politicians".
